Envrionmental Statement regarding Central Laundry, its processes, and committment to the environment
Central Laundry are aware of and comply with all relevant Environmental Legislation including:
Environmental Protection Act 1990
Water Resources Act 1991
Water Industries Act 1991
Packaging Waste Obligations Regulations 1997
Ozone Depleting Substance Regulations
Since January 2010 we have been working with the The Carbon Trust to replace a high percentage of our machinery with modern equipment which will have far less effect on the environment and will consequently reduce our Carbon Footprint
Supported and assisted by the Carbon Trust we have invested £750k in new machinery which will drastically reduce our Carbon Footprint whilst at the same time increase our capacity. The outcome is that we are eager for new business and with such investment we plan to be in business for many years into the future.
CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES:-
Water Recycling Final rinse water is saved in a separate tank and reused for the pre wash in the very next cycle. This has resulted in a 15% water saving.
Heat Recovery
All condense is pumped through a heat exchanger – the heated water is used for the main wash cycle in each load.
Boiler flue heat recovery – water is reheated for the main wash cycle.
Both of the above systems reduce the consumption of steam which reduces the consumption of gas.
Heat Conservation
All heat conducting apparatus is heavily insulated in order to reduce heat loss to an absolute minimum.
Paper
Fax Machine – Upon sending a fax, the confirmation is printed on the reverse of the sent document rather than printing on an additional sheet.
Unwanted documents/junk mail is used for scrap paper on the reverse side.
Invoices – wherever possible we print invoices for the month rather than weekly.
Linen
Irretrievably stained or torn linen is gathered and collected to be used as rags in the engineering industry.
Plastic
Plastic packaging usage is kept to a minimum. Black bin liners sent to us by customers are used by our staff to collect dry waste. On site recycle trailers are used to store plastic, cardboard and other packaging. They are exchanged on an as and when basis. The Company who operate this system is “What a Waste”.
Ink Cartridges
Computer ink cartridges are recycled via the Dixon Group – although we are currently looking at the possibilities of refilling ink cartridges on our own site.
Liquid Waste
Washing machines are filled with the correct volume (by weight) of linen prior to laundering. This ensures minimum water and energy wastage. Dip levels on machines are monitored by our engineers to minimise sewerage waste.
Dry Waste
Dry waste is compacted as much as possible and collected by
Independent contractors “Rainbow”.
Transport
Vehicle delivery routes are continually updated – (last review 2/7/07)
to ensure our drivers are taking the quickest possible route to each and every establishment, therefore minimising fuel usage and exhaust emissions.
Vehicles are renewed on a 3 year rotation basis. The latest vehicles have been fitted with speed limiters to comply with current legislation.
Polythene Waste
Central Laundry are continuously working to reduce their impact on the Environment. To this end the current project is to devise a system whereby the waste material (Polythene Wrap) from the service we provide is collected and recycled. It is our intention to finalise the details of this improvement to our service in the next 12-15 months.
